Glad to hear you were able to get out! I have never heard of the sugar water. I would probably stay away from it so she gets use to the bottle without having to have the sugar water. I also don't know if there are any health concerns to giving your baby sugar-you should ask you doctor. I would for sure try feeding her before she is too hungry. I did this with my oldest and it worked great. I know it is hard when their feeding schedule varies but soon she will be eating on a more reliable schedule and then you will know. One thing my sister has done is to make sure her daughter gets one bottle a day. I didn't do this and my youngest wouldn't have anything to do with a bottle and still won't. Maybe try doing the bottle at the same feeding each day and then she will get use to the bottle.

Thanks for all of your ideas....we did get out last weekend and she was fine!! However....once again she is not taking the bottle this week.....we think that we might be waiting too long to give her the bottle to the point that she is in an all out roar and gets herself beyond soothing with the bottle...then I end up putting her to my breast and she is fine....has anyone heard of possibly putting sugar water on the nipple?? Some one mentioned it to me...not sure if I want to try? My husband and I seem to think if we can give her the bottle ahead of schedule (before she gets whined up) she would be fine....however....sometimes she feeds at 3 hours and sometimes at 2 1/2 hours....so it is hard to time....

My oldest took a avent bottle until around 4 months and then she would have nothing to do with it. I tried a different brand and she took on quickly and never turned the bottle down. Maybe give a new bottle a try for a few days and see how that works.

Dorie,

We've had the same concerns. Six weeks is challenging because everything is so new, including us, the parents. Here's my philosophy:

First of all, does she do well when she's hungry if she's being entertained? Or is it an all out bawl fest until she's fed? (food or frenzy type of situation?) With both of our daughters, we were a little leary to leave them for an extended period of time for the exact same reason. I imagine it's not uncommon. However, we found it was necessary to get out together alone as a couple, and that when this is overlooked, the entire family suffers.

So we tried. We got a sitter here, and a sitter there (either kids with adults who would be present and were trusted). I'm sure you can guess what happened: certainly not the the worst of our expectations. We ended up coming back three hours later to a couple of happy or sleeping girls. When each of them were young enough to only eat milk, (both exclusively breastfed), they would either eat or be sufficiently entertained by the new faces and environment, and they were fine until they could be fed by us.

Suggestions? I recommend that you get out, give it a shot. What's the worst that can happen? Your child will whine for a few hours, and then you'll know. In our case, the worst case never happened. My wife and I always worried way too much for the fear of what ended up being quite the opposite. The only way you'll find the best approach is by getting a sitter you can trust, and then going for it.

Have fun on your date. Trust me, there's not likely much more that would make your husband happy!
