Ditching the Diapers
After countless months of changing diapers, most parents are anxious for their child to be potty trained. However, many parents get discouraged and delay this developmental milestone longer than is needed. When done correctly, potty training can be learned quickly and can be a fun experience!
Initially, you should make sure that your child is ready to be trained. First, they need to want to be potty trained. Second, there should not be any ‘power struggle’ between the parent and child. Work on these two issues before attempting to potty train a child.
Once you and your child are ready, set aside an entire day so you can give your full attention to this big event. Eliminate all distractions. Free your schedule of all reasons to leave the house or have visitors, and even consider turning off your phone. If you have other children, you may want to have them play at a friend’s house the majority of the day.
Basic Training
Supplies needed:
- 3-4 pair of new, exciting underwear with child’s favorite cartoon hero
- Several fun drinks, such as Kool-Aid or juice
- 10-15 small prizes, such as stickers, pencils, or treats
On the potty training day, dress your toddler in the new underwear with an explanation that you have a prize if she can keep the underwear dry and use the toilet. Take her to the bathroom and explain how she will need to tell you when she “needs to go.
Show her (and even have a practice run) how she will pull down her underwear, sit on the toilet, tinkle, and then wipe. Then show her how she will flush the toilet, wash her hands, and receive a prize (it’s best to have the stash of prizes right there in the bathroom drawer so you can reward her instantly after washing her hands).
Next, give her a big glass of juice and get ready. Choose an activity that you can do together that won’t be too distracting, and that can be easily interrupted. Ask from time to time if she needs to go yet, and when she does, hurry together to the bathroom for the routine. If she manages to keep the underwear dry, show her your excitement and grant the first prize quickly.
Now she is ready for another yummy drink, and the process will repeat the same way all day long. If she has an accident, quickly help her change into dry underwear again and assure her that she can keep them dry next time and still get a lot more prizes.
Big Kid Success
At the end of the day, make a big deal about what a “big girl she is. Let her make some phone calls to friends and family to announce that she is potty trained and that she knows how to keep her underwear dry. The accomplishment should be enough of a reward to her for future days if you continue to praise her.
