What They Don’t Know Won’t Hurt Them
Having trouble convincing your children that veggies really ARE delicious? Well, hopefully we can help change that!
Meal-times can be dreadful when they’re spent struggling to get your child to eat the healthy stuff! It’s up to us parents to ensure that our child is getting the nutrients they need, and as such, are entitled to be a little bit sneaky with food preparation. For instance, any time I make muffins (blueberry, banana, wheat…whatever they may be), I am sure to add some pureed carrots or zucchini. I also frequently make fruit smoothies for breakfast with some spinach leafs thrown in. This may sound less-than-appetizing to an adult, but trust me, with all of the sweet flavors in a smoothie, your child won’t even notice the spinach!
Add sweet potatoes to hot cereals, or squash to waffles. Experiment with different recipes and don’t be afraid to throw in any sort of pureed veggie. Chances are your child will never notice they are there!
Secret Identity…
The key to disguising vegetables is to bring them to a completely pureed and smooth state before adding them to different foods. Remember, when you puree vegetables, you may need to add some water to bring them to a desirable consistency. You might need to adjust certain recipes by adding less liquid to allow for a pureed vegetable. Also, be sure not to overpower the flavor of your child’s food with the veggies. Just add enough to ensure they are getting the nutrients they need.
Sweet Success
You will be surprised at how easy it is to hide vegetables in different foods! Take advantage of this for children of all ages! It works just as well for my teenagers as it does for my toddlers. I can rest easy knowing my children are eating healthy vegetables…all without their even realizing it! My kids can now get the healthy foods their bodies need, and meals are much more pleasant for everyone without the struggle!
