BOISE, ID, May 25th, 2006 — The lightweight, high-performance Ironman Stroller from BOB™ is used to running circles around its competition. This June, it will have the chance to run across the country – as the most crucial piece of equipment ultra-marathoner Paul Staso will take on his Promoting Active Children Everywhere (P.A.C.E.) Run 2006 – a solo 3,200-mile trek across the United States.
The Boise, ID-based stroller manufacturer donated the Ironman to assist Staso in fulfilling a promise he made to 96 fourth and fifth graders at Russell Elementary School in Missoula, MT. In an attempt to increase fitness among youth, Staso created a physical education curriculum called “Run/ Walk Across America,” which challenged Russell students to make their own virtual trek across the U.S. by walking and running each week to accumulate miles toward the cross-country goal. Staso promised that he would run the entire route alone if the combined fitness efforts of either the fourth or fifth grade class resulted in the successful completion of the 3,200-mile distance by the end of the school year.
Both the fourth and fifth grade classes have accomplished the feat ahead of schedule, meaning each student ran or walked approximately 2 miles a week throughout the school year – and Staso will indeed be footing it across the continent this summer.
“This is the kind of sponsorship opportunity that we love to participate in,” said Damon Noller, vice president of sales and marketing for BOB. “We are not only supporting a great cause, but also providing a true testament to the Ironman as the ultimate running stroller.”
Staso will push all 50 pounds of his required gear – including a tent, sleeping bag, clothing, shoes, food and water – in the unmodified BOB Ironman during his 92-day trek across 15 states. The Ironman is BOB’s lightest stroller and is designed with the serious runner in mind – offering slick tires to minimize rolling resistance and stiff suspension for maximized maneuverability and response.
In preparation for his June 23 start date, Staso has been training daily with the loaded Ironman, working on weight distribution and daily pacing. As he makes his way from Cannon Beach, OR to Lewes, DE, Staso will periodically be checking in with BOB from the road, providing details on miles logged and the condition of the stroller. BOB will be able to use this feedback for future improvements in the popular model’s design.
“I am thrilled to be using the Ironman for my cross-country journey,” said Staso. “There are many strollers on the market, but those produced by BOB are superior in many ways. I’m confident that the Ironman will successfully carry my gear from coast to coast and it is certainly good to know that BOB is behind me every step of the way…or should I say ‘ahead’ of me?”
